Matera

Two weeks back at home now and I am still reminiscing of my adventures in Basilicata. Matera is a city where the old meets the older. The Sassi is the ancient city with its strange and beautiful architecture  (as seen below!) eventually merging into the “new” part of town with its charming more traditional Italian look. On either side, day or night, Matera is a beautiful place…

Matera has so much to offer. The evening shots I took from the caves covering the cliffs on the other side of a valley that borders the Sassi side of the city. We went there to do some timelapses for our films. People lived in these caves for hundreds if not thousands of years of history. Some of them were actually turned into incredible churches within the caves, with religious frescos decorating the stone walls. One called The Cave of Original Sin was supposed to be one of the most beautiful of all. It was lost for hundreds of years though until a group of young men rediscovered it several decades ago after  a shepard mentioned having once taken a nap in a place that he described to be much like it. There are so many strange and beautiful places and stories like this surrounding Matera, and if you go the locals will be sure to share them with you as they did with us. I am already dreaming of going back. The video is to come next! Until then see you on facebook, twitter, and tumblr darlings…
